How to Almost Completely Eliminate Junk Mail

by Mike 3/17/2008 1:03:00 PM
As a service member or veteran you almost certainly have a full mailbox everyday. A plethora of grocery ads, pet coupons and credit card offers fill your box each and every day. Not my mail box, my mail box now contains 2 or 3 items of mail only. How did I accomplish this magical feat? Read on and learn how you to can experience the freedom of recieving only wanted mail.

The first task you must accomplish to stop at least 50% of your junk mail is to call the following 5 companies and request to be removed from their mailing list:

1) Equifax/Trans Union/Novus/Experian 1-888-567-8688
2) Publishers Clearinghouse: 1-800-645-9242
3) ValPak Coupons: 1-800-237-6266
4) Advo/Valassis 1-888-241-6760
5)Harte Hanks Direct Marketing 1-800-422-4116

The next step you want to do is collect all your unwanted junk mail throughout the week and put it in a separate pile. Do this for one month since most companies are on a monthly mailing campaign. Pick a day, perhaps Friday, to sit down for an hour and call the phone numbers on each of those mailings you have collected throughout the week. When you call, ask to be removed from all future mailings.

Please be advised that it will take about 3 months for you to be completely removed from most of the mailers. Many companies pre-print advertising material a quarter year in advance.
To stop future mailings, be sure to mention to any sales rep when you buy from catalogs
that you don’t want them to sell your name or send promotional materials. They will then exclude you from their mailing list.

The last and final step to reduce your junk mail is to sign up for the various companies that will remove you from certain junk mail lists. Some are free and some are paid service. I have listed some of my favorite companies below:
CatalogChoice.org -free
Green Dimes -fee based
41pounds.org -fee based
JunkMailFixit -fee based
Private Citizen -fee based
Tidy Mailbox -fee based

Try this experiment, I guarantee you will see a huge reduction of junk mail. You will be taking out the trash less and even saving dozens of trees. Everybody wins!
